First Earth Day’s Failed Predictions

earthdayHere are a few of the predictions made on the first Earth Day in 1970.

“Don’t these sound like the predictions today that fail, like the 50 million climate refugees by 2010 followed by the moving of the goalposts to 2020?”

“We have about five more years at the outside to do something.”
• Kenneth Watt, ecologist

“Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”
• George Wald, Harvard Biologist

“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“By…[1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.”
• Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day

“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.”
• Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University

“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….”
• Life Magazine, January 1970

“At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“Air pollution…is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist

“By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist

“Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”
• Sen. Gaylord Nelson

and this classic:

“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”

Clean Energy; Dirty Money: Green Corruption in Review

Gore and ObamaAlmost four years ago –– July 19, 2010 to be exact –– I wrote the following…

“Alarmingly, our environment has been hijacked by uber-rich individuals, crooked politicians, and an assortment of left wing extremists who are fueled by greed and power attached to a radical agenda to bring about “global governance,” “redistribute the wealth,” and put the progressive movement –– big government, social justice and the death of capitalism –– on the fast track. Under the guise of “saving the planet,” these players, who are all interconnected in a variety of ways, are transforming our climate into something more sinister –– a scam of epic proportions.
Two years after that, The Green Corruption Files was unleashed. Even as much has transpired in my quest to unearth and expose the massive amount of clean-energy dirt found inside this climate scam, I’ll spare you the grimy details. In short, since late 2009, I’ve been following the “green” money and connecting the dots –– money that not only led to waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement, but also cronyism, corruption, and an abundance of failure.”

In fact, January was my last report on the failures, whereas I tracked 32 Obama-backed green energy companies that have gone under, costing taxpayers over $3 billion –– with “the troubled category” that includes five bailouts at a price tag of $7.5 billion, along with 22 green energy projects that are circling the drain, placing that figure at over $6.7 billion. And this does not take into account the various taxpayer-funded green energy programs that have also failed miserably, nor my recent bombshell story on the “law-breaking, American hating” Spanish conglomerate, Abengoa, that was subsidized with $3.6 billion in stimulus loans and grants from the American taxpayer.

Green Fade-Out: Europe to Ditch Climate Protection Goals

The climate between Brussels and Berlin is polluted, something European Commission officials attribute, among other things, to the “reckless” way German Chancellor Angela Merkel blocked stricter exhaust emissions during her re-election campaign to placate domestic automotive manufacturers like Daimler and BMW. This kind of blatant self-interest, officials complained at the time, is poisoning the climate.

But now it seems that the climate is no longer of much importance to the European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, either. Commission sources have long been hinting that the body intends to move away from ambitious climate protection goals. On Tuesday, the Süddeutsche Zeitung reported as much.

At the request of Commission President José Manuel Barroso, EU member states are no longer to receive specific guidelines for the development ofrenewable energy. The stated aim of increasing the share of green energy across the EU to up to 27 percent will hold. But how seriously countries tackle this project will no longer be regulated within the plan. As of 2020 at the latest — when the current commitment to further increase the share of green energy expires — climate protection in the EU will apparently be pursued on a voluntary basis.

Google’s Green Energy Brag: $375 Million from Taxpayers (or more)

greenOn September 13, 2013, Google announced that it had signed a contract to buy the entire output of the 239 MW Happy Herford “wind farm” that is being developed by Chermac Energy near Amarillo, Texas. The project is expected to begin operation in late 2014.

Undoubtedly Chermac Energy is pleased to have a 20-year contract (purchased power agreement) for the sale of the electricity that will be produced. The Google deal will provide the developer a guaranteed cash stream that will enable project financing.

Undoubtedly, Google is pleased with all the favorable publicity the company has received for being so environmentally committed even though the wind-generated electricity will not be used in a Google facility. Instead, according to Google, the electricity will be sold in the wholesale market and Google will purchase the electricity it needs from the utilities serving its facilities or a wholesale supplier. Google will “retire” the renewable energy credits (REC) resulting from the deal.

Virtual Human Hamster Wheel Generates Electricity While You Workout

The illegal nature of the big gulp drink in New York city, the Chavez requirements that hot showers happen on only certain days of the week, and cities developed for strictly bicycle travel (cars and trucks strictly forbidden) help feed the conspiracy’s that swirl in my head. Maybe we finally arrive at the answer to it all where there is an endless supply of electricity and we end such things as pollution, world hunger or this CO2 thing Al Gore keeps talking about.

Think of it, one day we are strongly encouraged by our government to workout on a daily basis at workout stations that create electricity on site and send it on the electric grid for the other human hamsters. Come to think of it we would be huffing and puffing quite a bit of CO2 so that begs the question if we would need to wear a carbon emissions capturing mask as we workout?

Okay that’s a little spooky, of course that scenario is very unlikely but the conspiracy theories are always a fun thing to work out in ones head as I sometimes like to do.

6Here is an awesome idea produced and actually being used right now in a park in Hull Northwest England. So far the park has generated 40,000 kilowatt hours of electricity based on information from The Great Outdoor Gym Company. That is enough electricity to run 3 – 4 homes for a year on electric power. You can like them on Facebook here.

In general people can typically make about a kilowatt hour of electricity per day. So in a smaller city like Tyler Texas that has about 50,000 people capable of working out at a gym that could feasibly be a very big human hamster lab experiment. Your talking a good sized amount of energy being produced! Creating several gyms like this across the city and offering incentives for their use, you could get 50,000 kilowatt hours created per day that would power about 1200 homes. They say each person can easily generate at least 1 kilowatt hour per day.

All the sudden this idea sounds really great but if it were to ever get coupled with a law of some kind that forced people to generate electricity each day via exercise you kind of would be a hamster in the government spoke. We would collectively solve the worlds energy and pollution problem by actually being in a literal “rate race”.

The justification in selling the law could be that it’s for the good of the health of the citizens and to reduce pollution but at the same time your talking about a lot of money these human hamsters would be creating in the name of the environment. At this level of government control you would actually be trading human dignity and authority over the environment for environmental authority and control over humans. Quite a bit of backwards thinking here but this is actually how many people think and lots of them seem to have no way to stop just how far off the deep end they will go.

In summary, there is always a trade off in our earthly environment in order to offer benefits to humans. Pollution is something that will always happen as long as there are people. We should always work to reduce litter, pollution, etc. and live in moderation. The electricity generating outdoor gym is a great idea and I wish we had one in Tyler TX, nonetheless I can’t help but think of myself as a little turbine spinning hamster using one of these and the government temptation of implementing something like this as a required part of society in say something like the year 2050.
