Electricity Company Rate Plans

Electric Company Rate PlansWhen picking a rate plan for a residential home or apartment you need to understand how energy providers choose to market.

Every electric provider will have a few good deals on certain plans. It may be a 3 month rate or a 15 month rate but what you will see is a slightly cheaper price for that term than a typical contract term.

Compare Electricity Company Rates

It will not always be the 3 month and 15 month fixed rate plan that offers the best electricity price but this serves as an example so I can explain what is going on here.

Many times a standard 12 month fixed rate will offer the best deal but a provider can steer you to a different rate plan by making look better.

Even if certain things about an electricity company rate plan are bad for the customer an electricity provider will market it in such a way that you may see the bad aspects as positive.

These energy suppliers are simply featuring the bad parts of their plan and making you pay more for it. Don’t fall for these tricks as you end up losing in the end.

Below are some points to consider when choosing an electricity company and one of their rate plans.

  • Choose a standard electricity rate plan such as 6 months, 12 months, 24, or 36 months.
  • Don’t always go with the cheapest plan especially if it is a short term 1 – 3 month deal. That price will go up.
  • Lock in to a fixed rate and skip going with the cheaper variable price. Variable rates are always subject to change.
  • If a company leaves off TDSP charges, surcharges, and other hidden fees in their rate don’t trust that they have your best interests in mind. Go with a different provider.
  • Stay away from electricity rate plans that say they are fixed but also have a fuel surcharge that can adjust with the commodities market. This is a trick and it simply means your electricity company rate is not truly locked in as fixed.

Comparing Texas Electricity Prices and Green Energy

When comparing Texas electricity prices you have several energy companies out there competing for your business. If these companies have to use words like green energy, environmentally friendly or quite a few other buzz words to get your business they will.

Now comparing these green energy plans is a little challenging as you have to deal with companies selling quite a few different variations of this green energy stuff.

For instance, many of these electric companies are buying biomass renewable energy credits in other states and than applying that to their dirty energy.

These electric provider in Texas than sell you clean energy but in reality you are cleaning up another state and not the state of Texas.

It’s great that at least you are doing your part for the US as a whole but wouldn’t it be nice if it helped out Texas?

The government is about to cramp down on these green energy buzz words that providers use to sell their electricity service.

Soon many packages for things as simple as baby diapers may have to remove the environmentally friendly labels from their packaging.

Texas electricity providers may not be able to call their electricity renewable energy unless it meets a high enough percentage and overall things will hopefully be a little more transparent as to what it is your buying.

In the big picture it will be easier to compare green energy providers in an apples to apples comparison and choose the lowest price.

However, this may have more to do with setting up the whole cap and trade system rules in which electricity companies and manufacturers aren’t simply no longer advertising that their products are no longer environmentally friendly. Instead, government deadlines are set for manufacturers, energy generation facilities, electricity providers, and so on to make their power plants and products meet these new green friendly and carbon neutral requirements.

A large part of the requirement will be a tax on these products and services if these power plants and so forth can’t operate as carbon neutral as required. These taxes will than go into a slush fund where the government may choose to do something completely different with this money as they did with Social Security taxes.

Texas Electric: Get Federal Tax Credit for Making Energy Efficient Home Improvements in 2010

The federal government is going all out with its green energy initiatives. One of the ways it’s doing this is by incentivizing the program, ie, giving tax credits to homeowners for making their homes more energy efficient. Following is an overview of one such program for the year 2010 that can help Texas electric customers.

FAQs: How to Get Federal Tax Credits for Energy-Efficient Home Improvements Made in 2010

How do I get the tax credit? Basically, you have to make the improvement/purchase qualifying products and “place them in service” during the year 2010. You then claim the tax credit when you file your taxes next year.

How much of a tax credit can I get? The maximum amount is $1,500. The credit is 30% of cost. So in essence you get to spend $5,000 and get a credit for 30% of this.

Does this apply to products/improvements I make on my rental and/or vacation properties too? No, it must be your primary residence.

Which products/renovations qualify for the tax credit? Following is a partial list. Consult the Energy Star website for full details.

TXU Energy Rates

Compare TXU Energy Rates

If you have been needing to compare and shop for a cheaper Texas electric provider but just have not had the time we would like to encourage you to do so.

Texas electric rates during the summer of 2010 and 2011 have been around 8 – 9 cents per kWh on average when looking at the cheapest providers. During the summer of 2008 a cheap rate would have been 16 cents a kWh. As of October 2011 you can sign up for a cheap electric rate in the Dallas area at around 8.3 cents a kWh for 12 months fixed. In Houston the rate is closer to 9.3 cents a kWh for a 1 year fixed rate. If your TXU Energy rates are becoming unbearably high then we recommend switching to a cheaper electric company. We only recommend that you come off of your TXU Energy rate if you are currently off contract with them. We never recommend that you break a current contract that has not expired yet. The historical utility area of TXU is the Dallas area but they now operate in Houston as well. If you live in a different area you may enter that cities zipcode and click on the button to bring up custom price comparisons for your location.

Going From TXU to Reliant Energy

If you have considered switching off of TXU Energy and onto a new electric provider that you have heard advertise on the radio than please read this. Reliant Energy rates are currently being advertised (back in May of 2009) on billboards and on radio saying that they are now lowering their electric rates by “up to %10”. Unfortunately this means that you would still have to pay Reliant Energy around 13 – 14 cents a kWh when there are several energy providers offering residential electric rates in the 9 – 10 cents per kWh range for a 1 year fixed rate (as of May 2009). Don’t be fooled by a clever marketing campaign. Reliant Energy radio ads have their coworkers on the ads explaining that they love being able to help people but in reality paying an inflated price for electricity service is not really a help in this current economy. There are several reputable electric companies in Texas that offer much cheaper electricity service than Reliant and TXU Energy rates. We have a comparison tool of electric companies that beat both Reliant Energy rates and TXU Electric rates that we would be happy for you to try for yourself and see if in fact there are savings.

Comparison Chart Shows All Fees and Charges in Energy Rate

We encourage you to browse through the 1 year, 2 year, and 3 year fixed electric rate terms and pick the rate and monthly term that suits you best. The chart tool above has all fees and charges disclosed so you know exactly what you are signing up for. We want you to have no surprises when signing up for electric service as some providers we do not have on the chart do not disclose all charges in their rate. We do not work with Texas electricity companies that hide certain fees and charges that most electric companies will disclose in plain English.
