pot Assessing the Carbon Footprint of Cannabis

A 2012 study showed that the electricity use of indoor cannabis production is equivalent to that of 2 million average US homes, and yearly greenhouse-gas pollution from the electricity plus associated transportation fuels equals that of 3 million cars.

Yet, marijuana legalization advocates and the environmental community tend to gloss over the negative environmental impacts of cannabis production. Pot consumers, too, tacitly support destructive “farming” by their eagerness to pay a premium for indoor product.

Journalists have been noting the environmental harm of indoor marijuana cultivation for some time. Unfortunately, relatively few consider environmental costs, focusing instead on quality and appearance.
