Nations Power Prepaid Texas Electric Company Review

I discovered a new prepaid electric company opened up in Texas today called Nations Power. This company offers a fixed kilowatt hour rate as well as a variable pay what you can plan.

Regardless if you go with a traditional electric company that gives you 30 – 45 days to pay your bill or you go with a prepaid provider where you pay in advance I would choose the fixed rate every time.

Many electric companies will not hesitate to raise your variable rate on you beyond what you were expecting.

It is true not all variable rate plans are bad but to be on the safe side a fixed electric rate with Nations Power is probably the way to go.

The reason you would want to order electric service through a prepaid electric company like Nations Power is if you know you will not be able to afford deposits by other providers.

The Texas government does offer assistance to low-income families for deposits and rate subsidies but for most of us the hassle in qualifying for these assistance programs is simply not worth it.

If your credit is okay or bad you will likely have to pay a deposit with most all the Texas electric companies.

For instance, if you call TXU and Reliant they will likely both ask for a deposit ranging from $200 – $500 depending on how bad your credit is.

Of course if you have good credit no deposit is needed. Now lets say you have called these two large electric companies, TXU and Reliant, if you go on to call Bounce, Green Mountain, and Texas Power they will likely ask for a deposit as well.

Why would all these providers ask for a deposit? They all work from a credit checking service to manage their risk. There is about a 50% customer default rate below a certain credit score number and what score this is remains a tightly held secret.

There is simply no way of working with a provider that bills you 30 days out for service in negotiating a deposit and that is why a company like Nations Power can come in handy.

By going with a prepaid electric company you avoid the deposit but will sacrifice on price. Most prepaid electric companies have higher prices than traditional electric companies that check your credit.

Nations Power is based out of Allen Texas and has recently launched their company as a Texas prepaid electric provider. You may reach them at (866) 356-6850.

If you have used this prepay electric company please give our community feedback in a review format in the comment section below.

Interesting to note, the company with the same PUCT license number is Catalyst Energy Inc. which is a PA oil and gas exploration company. The activities of Catalyst encompass the exploration, development, production, transmission and processing of oil, natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons. Since Texas relies on natural gas for the production of much of the electricity it is worth noting that Catalyst now has a stake in both the production and retail aspect of natural gas. There is often an inverse relation to the cost of producing electricity using natural gas and the actual cost of natural gas. If these two factors of natural gas price and “heat rate” are managed well there can be a big payoff in being in the production and retail side of natural gas. Most important is to not gamble to much in the process of doing both.

Solar Panel Installers in Texas

Solar Costs Seem Prohibitive At First

For most people it seems a little confusing after researching the whole idea of a solar panel system for a home. The research ultimately leads people to the conclusion that a solar system just isn’t affordable enough to make sense. Considering that the investment could take 30 years to pay back itself a lot of people that bought a solar system would be dead by the time they began to see dividends on their Texas solar panels investment. There are however some solar panel setups that can actually lock you in to a fixed electricity rate and save you money over a short amount of time.

Cogenerating Your Electric Power

Many people have not considered implementing their solar panel system in a cogeneration capacity. Instead of using deep cycle batteries to store power you could sell your generated electricity back directly onto the electric grid and roll your meter back. It sounds too good to be true at first but the Texas government allows you to generate your own power and sell it back onto the electricity grid whenever you want. I have heard that Oncor and Centerpoint are not very easy to work with in making a cogeneration setup like this work but if you hire a licensed solar installer you will have an easier time of it.

Consultation on What Way Will Work Best When Using Solar

I recommend working with a solar panel installer in Texas that sells top of the line solar products. By hiring the best you will be installing state of the art solar equipment and they will be able to save you money by recommending a system that meets your budget. By and large the cogeneration setup is the most popular. You will not be able to power your air conditioner, refrigerator and other appliances and remain off the grid but you will be able to roll back your electric meter significantly. Proper consulting on how best to implement a solar panel system is just as important as the product you end up buying.

Bottom Line, What Will Your Electric Rate Look Like With Solar?

A good solar installation company will be able to tell you what your average electricity rate will be from the power coming off of your solar system. You can then average that rate into the rate you pay your electricity utility in your area and see if it averages down your costs. You will likely discover that it will bring your rate down some while you build green equity in your home.

Texas Lite-Up Low Income Electric Rate Discount Program

Do You Need Electricity with No Deposit?

Lite Up Texas is a great Texas government sponsored electricity service discount program for low-income families. The problem with lite up Texas is most people are needing electric service right away with no hassle and yet they must wait for government approval before qualifying for a cheaper rate. Trying to pick a good electric company that will work with you and Lite Up Texas does not always happen as fast as people would like. So what can you do in the mean time?

Well all Texas electric companies must work with the program by law but even still it these companies may drag their feet. You may be having more of a problem coming up with a deposit rather than dealing with a high per kilowatt hour electric rate which is what Lite Up Texas is used for to bring that price down.

To start out with if you are low-income you want to at least avoid any deposits you are being asked for. I would work with a prepaid electric company to avoid a deposit as your fastest way out of this nightmare. Please call this number to order electric service with no deposit: 1-888-620-3823

You can also check other Texas electricity companies using the zip code compare box at the top right that work with the department of health and human services as well as the PUCT in offering you government subsidized cheaper electric rates. The program is based on summer prices and is always subject to change.

The Texas Public Utility Commission discount electric rate program is not always available but is often re-initiated each year based on need that allows Texas residential electric customers to receive a 12% discount on their current electric rate. The program is only available to those who qualify and certain criteria must be followed to make sure the initial qualification goes through succesfully so that you get the anticipated discount.

For instance, if you have signed up with a Texas electric provider using a different name, phone number, social security number, mailing address, or electric service address that differs with what you have given the Department of Health and Human Services then you will likely be rejected because of your information not matching what the government has on file for you. In order to make sure the Texas LITE-UP program goes through on the first try you may want to get a copy of your application on file with the HHSC and fill out the LITE-UP application using that same information.

How do I apply for the Texas LITE-UP electric rate discount program?

You must first sign up with a low cost electric provider (using our compare chart at the top right is a good way to do this) or if you have bad credit I would try a no deposit company by calling 1-888-620-3823. Once you have started service with these Texas electric companies you can begin the process of signing up with LITE-UP. They will require that you provide a current electric bill and two months of proof showing what your income is. To obtain the LITE-UP application you must call them at 1-866-454-8387.

What Type Of Discounts Can I Expect?

You will be discounted during certain historically high energy consumption months. The months that the electric rate discounts will apply will be for May, June, July, August, and September of 2008 and 2009. The discounts will not start until you have been approved and your status has been received by the Texas electric provider.

Who Can Apply For Lite-Up Texas?

You can either show proof that your income is 125% of the federal poverty guideline by submitting your last 2 months of income history to Lite-Up or if you are receiving Medicaid and or food stamps you will automatically qualify.

Transmission and Distribution Service Provider Charges

Transmission and Distribution Service Provider Charges (TDSP)

Texas electricity consumers often go out and receive quotes from several retail electric providers and notice that there is an additional charge that is not quoted with the energy rate. The TDSP charges or what are sometimes known as pass thru charges are left off of the rate. This can appear a little shady as if the energy supplier is purposefully trying to make their electric rate look better then it actually is.

TDSP charges are not your electric rate?

What is actually going on when the electricity provider leaves the TDSP charges from the energy quote? They are not trying to trick the customer. Texas deregulated the energy market in Texas back in 2002 and when they did this they unbundled the energy rate. The energy provider prior to 2002 was also the pole and wires company. That means the TDSP charges and energy rate were owned and charged by one company prior to 2002. When deregulation occurred the Texas government with the oversight of the Public Utility Commission split up the former monopolies such as TXU Energy, First Choice Power, Reliant and others and created seperate companies. Now you have over 40 Retail Electric Providers to choose from and only a few pole and wires companies. In fact for your region you only have one choice for who you pay your TDSP charges to. In the Dallas area you would pay TXU now known as Oncor http://www.oncorgroup.com. This TDSP charge will show up on your energy bill the same regardless of which Retail Electric Provider you choose. This TDSP charge is simply past on to you from Oncor directly to your energy bill. The TDSP charge can be anywhere from 1 – 8 cents a kilowatt hour and sometimes more. In order to find out exactly how much you pay the pole and wires company you would need to call them and ask for your historical usage. This data will show you exactly how much you pay in TDSP charges for each month along with the corresponding kwh usage for the month.

Electric Providers are showing several different estimates for my TDSP charges

The reason electric providers are giving you an energy quote with an estimate that is not the same as another providers estimate is because they can only guess as to what exactly you may pay for next year. The TDSP charges are figured based on a Public Utility Commission of Texas Rule that is complex and changing. The TDSP charge also changes based on the amount of usage used. Because of these variables you may see several different Transmission and Distribution estimates. The important thing to remember is that these are not quotes but only a helpful estimate to consider so you will know what the total charges would look like. In the end you will pay the same TDSP charges regardless of which electricity provider you choose. Note: It is still not illegal for Texas electricity providers to secretly mark up the TDSP charges with their profit margin and hide this fact in the fine details of the contract. Electricity Bid does not work with any Texas electric companies that do this practice although they are still out there.

For more information about these charges please speak to a Texas energy consultant to learn more. You can speak with a consultant from Electricity Bid by calling 1-800-971-4020
